Work While You Study

Whilst you are at University it is no secret that your main focus should always be on your studies, after all, that is why you are there. That said, in order to make money that helps you to get by, as well as learn vital work based skills, you might also decide that you want to work while you study.

The thing about this is that it can be hard to know where to start when it comes to working while you study. So, to help you out, we have put together our short guide on how to work while you study.

Find a part time or temporary role

One of the first things that you should think about is taking a part time role, be that temporary or permanent. You should find out where the right jobs are advertised as well as how you should apply for them. You may find that not only are there part time jobs advertised within the University campus itself, but there are also drop in sessions held which are there to help you to find out more about securing a role for yourself as well as tax rules and help for those students who are here from overseas.

Work for yourself

Whilst finding a part time role is often the first route that a student will think of when it comes to securing work and earning money, it isn’t the only option to consider. Another path that you can take is to work for yourself.

The most common way to work for yourself when you are studying is to take on freelance work. The great thing about this is that you can do it from the comfort of your dorm, or at the very least on campus and you can work as and when you need, or as and when you can.

Just like working in an employed role, working for yourself does come with some important considerations that you need to keep in mind before you jump in. Of course, you will need to know where you will find work and you will also need to work out what the agreed terms of this work are, such as when you will be paid and how you will get paid.

You will also need to think about tax and national insurance, as this is a key part of working or yourself. Finally, you will also need to consider whether or not you have the discipline and time management skills to focus on your work as well as your studies. As this isn’t as easy as you may think.

Working, whether it is in an employed role, or for yourself, whilst you study has a whole host of benefits. Not only will you have the chance to earn money, but you will also learn important work skills that will help you in the future.
