• Tailor Your CV to the Specific Job – A lot of people make the mistake of assuming that once they have created a CV, they can simply send it off to any job that they apply for However, this isn’t the best way to go about things. It’s important to tailor your CV to each specific job that you apply for. This doesn’t mean creating a brand new CV every time, but it does mean adapting and tweaking it to make it more relevant. Think about what the employer is looking for and highlight this.

• Always Aim to Be the Ideal Candidate – There is always an ideal candidate that every employer is looking for, so always aim to be it. It’s likely to change from one employer to another, but by carefully reading the job specification you will be able to determine what skills and work experience they are looking for. Every employer will be looking for certain things in a new employee, so focus on showing that you meet the criteria.

• Show Why You’d Be an Asset to the Team – Once you have shown an employer why you would be good at the job itself, show that you would be an asset to the team. There’s no reason to make something up or claim to be something you’re not, as employers will be looking for honesty. Stand out from other applications by listing your interests and hobbies, some of which may even benefit your abilities in the workplace.
